Holy SHIT. The entire point of the artwork was to desexualize skirt length - to mark the lengths as scars, extending from a black, almost funereal skirt. It was meant to mark these preconceived notions of what is and isn’t acceptable as violent wounds on a woman’s body, reminding us of the central role enforced modesty plays in rape culture.

I’d also add that Every Day by David Levithan is, in a way, a really good book about a non-binary character. Part of what makes A and Rhiannon’s love story so unique and compelling is that it exists outside of binary constructions of gender and sex identity.

When people turn to fictional characters, it’s often because they want an escape. The stories of these people shelter us from the storm of our daily lives; they save us, if only for a little while.
